Sony VPL-VW10HT Interesting Projector Lamp
Not too long ago I came across a projector of considerable resolution and I was amazed at the price. After all, it isn’t often that you discover a projector with WXGA quality picture that is priced under $3000 US. I decided to buy the VPL-VW10HT and managed to haggle the dealer down to $2500 US since it was a used model. I’ve had it for a year now and I haven’t had to replace the projector lamp yet!I must say that this projector is one solid piece of machinery that uses some innovative technology in regards to its image. Like I was saying before, it offers a resolution of a slightly better WXGA quality, and what this means is that it produces 1366x768 pixels for its image.
In a nutshell, when you watch movies in a widescreen format you won’t lose any resolution due to the “stretching” effect that occurs. Most projectors that offer 16:9 native formats sometimes forget that the LCD panel itself still can only have 1280 pixels and therefore will still lose a little in the vertical resolution as the picture is stretched horizontally.
The VPL-VW10HT takes care of the resolution problem giving you crisp picture with little or no distortion for even the smallest objects that are on the screen. The VPL-VW10HT isn’t without a few setbacks though producing an image that isn’t always as dark and black as it should be. We all know that LCD projector versus DLP projectors don’t usually compare when it comes to contrast. But in the case of the VW10HT, even among its LCD competitors, is lacking in the contrast department. This is not a huge problem though unless you require commercial grade contrast, or if you are extremely anal about sacrificing your blacks for a little more resolution.
The 1000 ANSI lumens that the VW10HT manufactures is good enough for the home theatre market however, the use of its 200W projector lamp seems to be wasted. Usually when a projector utilizes a projector lamp of such high intensity, therefore using much energy, the result is a bright picture averaging at least 1500 ANSI.
On a side note, the noise level for this machine is a low 30db, giving us the impression that perhaps the projector lamp machinery is working less hard in order to save energy and ultimately provide a quieter viewing sensation. The main problem with the lamp is that it only lasts 1000 hours. This could be a result of using a high power lamp for such low lumens output. Lucky for those who own this machine there is a place like myprojectorlamps.com that can provide inexpensive projector lamps no matter how old or how rare they are.
The VW10HT has all the inputs except for DVI but includes HDTV inputs of 1080i compatibility. Overall, it is a great projector that seems to last and last without any problems that I have heard of, and delivers a true crisp image throughout.
