Acer’s PD723P And Its High Priced Lamp
Acer has not been a major presence in multimedia projectors but is now starting to push itself onto the scene with its latest PD723P DLP projector. It is a smaller and more portable projector that can distribute an unfair amount of brightness and contrast. The one quip that many people may have with this particular projector is the price that Acer is supposedly selling its replacement lamp modules for. According to sources they are demanding the shockingly high price of roughly $1400. They know that if they are selling the PD723P for $3500-4000, then the poor consumers who decide to purchase will be stuck with having to buy the replacement lamp from their website.
The PD723P is quite a bright projector with an output of 3100 ANSI lumens, and this is powered by the 250W projector lamp that is inside. Perhaps Acer has built a projector lamp that is more efficient than the regular UHP projector lamps of today and this could be why they are charging so much for their lamp. But this is not the case, as it only lasts for 2000 hours.
Another possible reason why this particular projector lamp is so expensive is because it miraculously does not over heat and therefore does not require a loud cooling fan system. The PD723P is after all rated at 28db for its noise level.
Acer has certainly developed a way to turn a bigger profit by making sure that they set their prices high. Most other replacement projector lamps are expensive, but even with the markup that some resellers are employing, I personally have not seen anything over $1000.
The module itself may be quite expensive to manufacture, rather than simply the lamp itself. The secret of the module might be where lies the secret of Acer’s ability to produce 3100 ANSI lumens with an average 250W projector lamp.
With all kinds of new technology, there must certainly be a way to “magnify†the strength of a lesser wattage projector lamp so that it can produce a brighter image. But to ask the consumer to pay almost $1500 for a replacement projector lamp is absolutely ridiculous. All I can say is that the revolution will come.
