Projector Industry Go Boom Boom

As many people across the country are learning, projectors are wonderful and increasingly common household devices. For anyone that has experienced the joy of moving a 64� television to a new home or apartment, let me tell you a little secret. Most projectors weigh just less than 10 lbs and can be carried with one hand if you’re a little cocky. Oh yeah, they produce an image that is High-Definition as well and create screen sizes that are customizable and usually about 50% larger than that monolith you lugged from Jersey to your new home in Manhattan. So, no wonder the projector industry go boom boom (just like the dynamite).

The projector industry is already a $12 billion dollar a year industry and things really haven’t gotten out of control yet. It is predicted that by 2009 sales of LCD and DLP projectors will be breaking the 12 million units per year mark. With numbers like those, the shape and style of the average American home will be transformed, the box television will be replaced by a blank wall and a projector mounted inconspicuously into the ceiling. Remember, those stereotypical 1950’s portraits of the perfect Mom gathered around the television with Dad and the kids? Well, stop, because they didn’t really exist then and they definitely don’t exist now.

Projectors are here to stay and as the technology gets smaller and smaller it will eventually be hard to imagine life without them. In fact, if you want to get a clearer picture of just how fast this industry is growing, in 2004 only worldwide cell phone sales grew at a faster rate than those of the projector industry. (For the record, front projector sales in 2004 came in at just over 3 million units sold for the year). If you stop to contemplate all the technologies that are in the world and developing in the world, the fact that projectors are growing second fastest is astounding.
