Epson 70c: Projector Lamp ELPLP13

The Epson EMP70 or 70c as it is sometimes known, is one of Epson’s staple projectors and symbolizes everything that Epson is in the projector world. Most people do not know that Epson controls over 50% market share in the manufacturing of LCD panels. This means that Epson projectors are often times cheaper than most in the industry while maintaining quality. The EMP70 is no exception. The projector is lightweight and affordable. When it first debuted in early 2001 for just over $2500, the projector was an instant success and still goes on selling to this day in used marketplaces such as Projector Central.

The Epson 70c has some interesting specs; it uses a 150W projector lamp (ID#ELPLP13) that generates a middle of the road 700 ANSI Lumens. (The projector lamp is available at our sister site myprojectorlamps.com for $274.99 USD plus shipping). The unit features a contrast ratio of 300:1 and weighs just less than 7 pounds. Lightweight projectors such as these are standard fare when it comes to Epson, and the 70c’s light weight is definitely an attribute that makes the brand so popular.

This particular projector (the EMP70) has all the HDTV capability of the average projector released three years later (2004). For example, it has 1080p, 1080i and 780p high-definition capability as well as EDTV functionality (EDTV stands for Enhanced Definition and is another version of the same technological process that HDTV employs).

Besides having all these home video and television hook ups, the Epson 70c is surprisingly capable of handling practical business applications as well. For example, the projector is personal computer compatible and has the ability to project an image with a 1280x1024 resolution. This high-resolution feature allows the projector to display images from computer screens that can handle multiple windows as once – making the EMP70 an asset in any business environment.

We tested the projector by bringing it to a park to watch the final stage of the Tour de France with some friends. Unfortunately, the Outdoor Life Channel does not, as of yet, have an HDTV option. However, the image was crisp and we were able to see Lance Armstrong push down the Champs d’Elysee while sipping on that sweet champagne of champions. The projector performed beautifully and everyone had a great time – even though it was sunny out (meaning the image was bright enough to enjoy even outdoors!).

Overall, we recommend the Epson 70c to anyone who is thinking about buying a used projector – and especially if you are looking for a projector that has a wide range of capabilities. Until next time – take it easy.
