Proxima DP8400x…The Bright Solution

It is true that if you want to get a brighter projector, you have to put your money where your mouth is, and dish out the cash. This holds true for the Proxima DP8400, which was introduced in late 2003 for nearly $5000 US.

The DP8400 is an LCD projector that can shoot out 3500 ANSI lumens, while still maintaining a decent contrast level. Where many projectors that have high lumens have failed, the makers of the DP8400 actually thought of the consumer and coupled high lumens with a 750:1 contrast ratio.

Getting back to the brightness of this beast, it was made bright so that the viewer could have an extremely large picture. To be precise, the DP8400 can produce an image up to 32 feet wide! Of course, it is now 2005, and this projector is ripe for the picking. You should be able to get a good deal on this one if you can find one, and if you are looking for that extra giant screen, you’ve found it.

The reason why this projector is so bright is its 275W projector lamp. This projector lamp lasts for 2000 hours, but like many of its high powered friends, it is likely to suffer the same fate of not lasting as long as specified.

The contrast ratio, as I mentioned before, is a favorable 750:1. The DP8400 provides excellent black levels and color saturation that is quite good for an LCD projector. The resolution is also at par with the majority of projectors these days sitting at 1024x768p.

The DP8400 is for those that have a large enough venue to take advantage of such a powerful projector. If you decide to squeeze the size down to less than 6 feet and expect the image to keep from over-saturating, you might be kidding yourself while you go blind.

Never mess around with a projector that has too much lumens for you to handle. Always consider the benefits and the costs.

With such a powerful lamp, expect the fan to be working overtime, therefore making it a little bit noisier than your average machine. Clean the projector with compressed air or other useful methods often, to keep this 40db clunker from over-exerting itself.

It has all the inputs except for DVI, but for TV nuts, it is compatible up to 1080i HDTV. Overall, it is a pretty nice machine and nothing bad to say about it…yet.
