Sanyo PLC-XP18…Consistent Brightness
Consistency is an issue that many projectors have struggled with, and with the prices of projectors becoming more competitive, hopefully the quality remains high. Enter the Sanyo PLC-XP18, a projector that is extremely bulky, but for a reason. You may have problems finding a suitable shelf for this beast, but let me tell you, they don’t build them like they used to. At least when projectors were a rarer commodity, the craftsmanship that went into the more expensive projectors were of the high quality type.
Back in 2000, when the PLC-XP18 came onto the scene, it was priced at $5500 US. It was expensive, but the money was well spent. The PLC-XP18 could produce 2000 ANSI lumens, which during these days was quite the accomplishment. It is an extremely bright projector that amazingly keeps a good consistency of brightness spread across the whole screen.
You will notice as your projector’s lamp gets older, the brightness of the image gets weaker, and the consistency gets worse. Many OEM projector lamps are born with this burden with the exception of a few. The people who purchased the PLC-XP18 have noticed that they are one of the exceptions to the rule.

The projector lamp combined with the high quality machinery of the XP18 are a lethal combination, and can produce great brightness for longer than the average hours used. Throughout its lamp life, the XP18 also maintains its consistency of brightness over the entire image.
We have uncovered the unique qualities of the PLC-XP18 for all those who want to purchase an older projector that can live up to expectations. However, it doesn’t end there. The PLC-XP18 also has ample resolution, with 1024x768p, and plenty of contrast, with a decent 700:1 ratio.
The colors are nicely saturated, the picture is surprisingly crisp, but since it is an LCD, the screen door effect is somewhat present. Make sure you don’t pull your projector too far away from the viewing area; otherwise it may expose its flaws.
The PLC-XP18 gives you many options as far as inputs go, offering HDTV formats up to 1080i, component video, but you unfortunately don’t get DVI. It is a little bit heavy, a little bit loud (39db) and a little bit husky, but overall a good value for those who want to keep their projector for years.
